HAMLIN TOWNSHIP — The Mason County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man who died in an early morning fire at 3333 N. Lincoln Road. David Nelson, 46, died as a result of injuries sustained in the garage fire, according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole. Earlier reports stated the building was a pole barn, but the building was a wooden structure.

Hamlin Township Fire Department and Pere Marquette Township Fire Department were called to the property about 4:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, for a building fire. The fire destroyed an approximate 300-square-feet pole barn.

The sheriff’s office has been investigating the fire. Late Saturday afternoon, detectives and deputies executed a search warrant at the property. On Saturday, Det. Sgt. Tom Posma said at this point the incident is suspicious but would not confirm if there was any criminal intent.

Ludington Fire Department was also dispatched to assist with water supply at the fire Saturday morning.
