WSCC offering 2 new programs this fall. 

VICTORY TOWNSHIP — West Shore Community College will offer two new occupational programs this fall: a computer support services and medical assistant program.

The computer support services (CSS) program is a two year program designed to prepare students to enter a challenging and rewarding IT career. Software, hardware, networking and web expertise is needed in virtually all companies today.

Employable in organizations of all sizes across all industry, the graduate of this program is prepared to answer a vast array of questions, ranging from simple desktop troubleshooting, internet connection issues, cloud development and management, web page design, and instructing users how to work the features of their system.

“The CSS faculty members have certifications and business knowledge with real workforce experience. They are excited about this new program and are prepared to teach,” said Christy Christmas, dean of occupational programs. “Students can expect a great deal of hands-on experience in this new program.”

Students will have the opportunity to earn computer and network, Internet and cloud certifications. In addition to classroom hands on learning, internships in actual job positions are part of the program.

The medical assistant program is offered by the WSCC Nursing and Allied Health Department and has two distinct degrees associated with it: Medical Assistant, business medical office focus and Medical Assistant, science focus.

The program trains students to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical responsibilities of a medical office. Instruction includes preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing, technical aspects of phlebotomy, pharmacology, the proper use and administration of medications, taking and documenting vital signs, cardiology including proper lead placements, professional workplace behavior, ethics, and the business and legal aspects of health care.

Students who successfully complete the program are eligible to sit for the registered medical assistant exam offered through American Medical Technologists.

Registration for the college’s fall semester is underway for first-time, returning, and guest students and will continue to the first week of each term’s classes. The fall semester begins August 28 and ends December 15.

Students who register early for classes have the best selection of courses, as well as day and time offerings. For those entering college for the first time, now is also the time to concentrate on the application process for financial aid that can help pay for classes.
