LUDINGTON — Two Ludington men were arraigned in 79th District Court this week on charges of operating/maintaining a laboratory involving methamphetamine, possession of ephedrine and using a computer to commit a felony, according to State, Sheriffs’, Chiefs’ Enforcement of Narcotics Team Det./Lt. Andrew Ambrose.

“On June 14, 2017, Nicholas Gene Helfrich, 27, of Ludington was arraigned in the 79th District Court of Ludington on the charges of operating/maintaining a laboratory involving methamphetamine, possession of ephedrine and using a computer to commit a felony. On June 15, 2017, Bryan Jacob Carroll, 33, of Ludington was arraigned in the 79th District Court of Ludington on the same charges. The most serious charges are felonies punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Both subjects remain lodged in the Mason County Jail. Their bonds have been set at $50,000 cash.

“In April of this year, SSCENT detectives assisted the Mason County Sheriff’s Office with an investigation on Pine Street, near Jackson Street, in the City of Ludington. Members of the Mason County Sheriff’s Office were conducting an investigation into two subjects who were walking down the street. During their roadside investigation, the deputies observed items commonly used to manufacture methamphetamine. SSCENT conducted the follow-up investigation and presented their findings to the Mason County Prosecutor’s Office which then issued the charges.”

SSCENT is a multi-jurisdictional task force that serves Manistee, Mason, Oceana and Lake counties. SSCENT asks that if you have information about drug activity in your area, to call 231-843-7045 or contact your local police department.
