A male suspect is in custody following a shooting at the Spartan West Bowling Center, 2253 W. US 10-31, Tuesday afternoon. Law enforcement personnel were dispatched to the bowling center just before 5 p.m. for a report of shots fired inside the building, according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.

“According to the initial dispatch information, there was an argument inside the building between employees,” Cole said. “At some point objects were thrown and then there were gunshots.” Several people then left the building, Cole said.

“Nobody got hurt and we are treating this as a domestic situation,” Undersheriff Jody Hartley added.

The first law enforcement units on scene included a Mason County Sheriff Office deputy and a Michigan State Police trooper. Cole said the units immediately called for backup. The sheriff’s office’s tactical response team was dispatched; the team happened to be conducted a training in Ludington which meant a quick response. An officer and the chief from Scottville Police Department also responded. Cole said law enforcement personnel established a perimeter to the south and the west of the building and located several people. He said three people were likely involved in the incident and a male suspect was apprehended who was the likely shooter. The suspect and others were rounded up within 15 minutes of the law enforcement units arriving on scene.

Cole would not confirm the age of the male suspect, but dispatch information indicated he was 26-years-old.

“We are still trying to sort everything out and question all the people who were there during the incident,” Cole said. “Our first concern was for the safety of the public, which was why the tactical team was dispatched along with units from other departments. We were able to gain control of the scene and locate the people who we believe were involved or who witnessed the incident.”

The incident remains under investigation. More details will be released in a separate story when they become available.
