PERE MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP — John O’Connor has been hired as the new manager of the Mason County Airport. O’Connor will take over operations on May 1, replacing long time manager Dave Johnson who is retiring.

As a Ludington native and Ludington High School alumni, John O’Connor began his aviation career at Mason County Airport in 1993 as a student pilot.  After obtaining his bachelor’s degree in aviation technical management from Western Michigan University he joined airport operations at Denver International Airport (DEN).  His 18 ½ years of service at DEN for the city and county of Denver presented him with some amazing experiences and opportunities in operating an airport that sees 58 million passengers a year, according to Mason County Administrator Fabian Knizacky.

“But he has longed to reconnect with his general aviation roots and the community that he loves,” Knizacky said in a press release. Being able to serve as the airport manager at Mason County Airport is a dream come true for John.  His wife and two children are looking forward to all that this opportunity and community have to offer.”

“John has an excellent knowledge of airport operations and a passion for customer service that will make him a valuable addition to the Mason County Airport operations,” said Mason County Board of Commissioners Chairman Charles Lang. “While we will miss the excellent and dedicated service that Dave Johnson gave to our citizens, we are pleased to welcome a new manager with the experience and expertise that John brings to the position.”

An open house honoring Johnson will be held on Friday, April 21 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Mason County Airport, 5300 W. US 10 in Pere Marquette Township.
