VICTORY TOWNSHIP – Schools.com announced recently that West Shore Community College has earned a top 10 ranking among Michigan’s community colleges.

According to Schools.com, WSCC achieved an overall number three ranking on the best community college in Michigan 2016 list.

WSCC was rated second among the top Michigan community colleges for the average net price for a year of college as calculated by the typical amount students pay once financial aid is applied to their overall cost.

The student-teacher ratio was one of the factors the report also took into account. WSCC has an average 13 students per teacher, which is slightly lower than the national average for community colleges, and much lower than the average 21 students per teacher found in four-year universities.

Along with its standard college degree and certificate programs, WSCC was also cited for its collaboration with the West Shore Educational Service District in the operation of ASM Tech Early College High School, an initiative that aims to help high school students earn both a high school diploma and an associate degree in as little as five years.

WSCC President Kenneth Urban said the ranking confirms what he and his colleagues have always known about the college. “We are grateful to be recognized and know our college is a great value both educationally and financially. While student success is at the core of our mission, our faculty and staff take great pride in providing personal attention to our students giving them a superb foundation to be successful in any four-year college or upon entering the workforce.”

Schools.com ranked Michigan’s community colleges on a variety of factors and scored on a five-point scale, using six data points including the percentage of students enrolled in distance education, cost of attendance, student-to-faculty ratio, the average retention rate, the three-year comprehensive success rate and flexibility. Thedata points came from the National Center for Education Statistics, U.S. Department of Education College Scorecard, and the Michigan Center for Educational Performance and Information 2015.
