Joyce Claire Mathews, 85 of Scottville, passed away peacefully at her home on Wednesday, August 24, 2016 surrounded by her family. Joyce was born on April 16, 1931, the daughter of Albert and Clara (Hansen) Bentz and graduated from Ludington High School. On June 12, 1953, she married William Mathews and they celebrated 41 years together before he preceded her in death on September 18, 1994. Joyce was also preceded in death by her parents, William’s parents Phil & Laura Lamrock, her brothers Raymond, Howard, Wallace, Wilber, and Bennie.Family was always at the center of Joyce’s heart. She loved being a mom and especially was blessed to be called “Grandma” and was very close to her in-laws Phil & Laura. She and Laura shared many adventures traveling together over the years. When she wasn’t enjoying her role as mom, Joyce worked as a waitress for Ferrell’s, Hansen’s, and Zack’s restaurants, and drove school bus for Mason County Central Schools for a short time. Following William’s passing, Joyce enjoyed trips to the casino, playing cards with friends and family, bowling, or could often be found working in her yard.

Her family would like to express much love and gratitude to granddaughter Katrina for her exceptional love and care of Grandma, and would also like to give special thanks’ to all of her caregivers in her final days.

Joyce will be lovingly remembered by her son Kurt Mathews and his wife Janet; her daughter Kathy Mathews, all of Scottville; her beloved grandchildren Kyle Mathews and his wife Sarah; Katrina Genter and her husband Pat; Eric Riggs and his wife Mary; and Laura Mosier and her husband Craig, all of Ludington; her precious great-grandchildren: William and Drew Mathews, Zachary, Ayden, Mayce, and Jackson Genter, Mattea and Molly Mosier, and Chase Petersen, her sisters-in-law Lucille Bentz of Ludington, and Bernadine Wright of Muskegon, her brother-in-law Wilbur Mathews of Muskegon, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held for Joyce at 3 p.m. on Monday, August 29 at Wyman Funeral & Cremation Services – Stephens Funeral Home in Scottville. Burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery in Ludington. Friends may meet with Joyce’s family for a time of visitation on Monday afternoon from 2 p.m. until time of services at the funeral home.
