PERE MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP — Char Etchison of Riverton Township didn’t expect to win Homemaker of the Year when she entered exhibits in the Western Michigan Fair’s open class competition. She called it an honor when she was given the award Wednesday night at the fair.

Etchison made a patriotic quilt and a dragon-themed quilt for her grandchildren. She also knitted wool mittens and entered a photograph of a butterfly and a daisy. She raised the butterfly from an egg and grew the daisy. She also entered peach, black raspberry and black sweet cherry jams along with canned sweet cherries and prune plumbs.

“I just wanted to enter. I never expected to be Homemaker of the Year,” she said.
