VICTORY TOWNSHIP – The work of a Grand Rapids artist, Tom Clinton, is currently on display until February 25 in the Manierre Dawson Gallery on the campus of West Shore Community College.

Clinton will be on the campus February 10 to demonstrate his collograph printing process at 11 a.m. in the drawing/painting studio followed by a presentation in the Center Stage Theater at 2 p.m. Clinton will present “Formulas, Rules and Sequences,” a discussion about the inspiration and ideas behind his work.

The exhibit and presentation is in conjunction with WSCC’s Year of Math, a year-long focus on the importance of mathematics in a variety of disciplines. Clinton’s work reflects an interest in the ways that logic, process, negotiation and regulation impact the making of art.

Before attending art school, Clinton studied statistics and practiced law.  Not surprisingly, those earlier experiences continue to have a significant influence on his practice as a printmaker and installation artist.

Clinton will explore the ways in which formulas, categories, and other regulations have been incorporated into his production process. What fascinates him is the manner in which individuality and complexity assert themselves in situations where the available options have been somehow limited.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAfter attending law school at the University of Michigan and practicing law for many years, Clinton received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a concentration in printmaking from Kendall College of Art and Design in Grand Rapids. He has also taken numerous art classes in printmaking from the Oxbow School of Art in Saugatuck, Michigan.

The gallery is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Friday 9 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. The gallery is also open on evenings and weekends during events at the Center Stage Theater.

All events will take place in the Arts and Sciences Center and are free and open to the public.
