Police warn of electric company telephone scam.

LUDINGTON — Ludington Police Department is warning residents of a telephone scam. Ludington Police Chief Mark Barnett said he received a call from a business owner who reported she had received a phone call from a person stating his name was Jason Stine from “Consumers Power” (the electric company’s actual name is Consumers Energy). “He

“He stated that the business has not paid its electric bill and there is a crew in the area getting ready to shut off the electricity unless the business pays the bill over the phone,” Barnett said.

“In this case the business employee told “Jason Stine” that she needed to check on something and would call Jason Stine back.  He gave the telephone number of 888-733-2779 Ext 17.  When the employee recalled Mr. Stine it went to voicemail.  Shortly after she left the voicemail Jason Stine called her back.  The business employee asked Mr. Stine for the business’ Consumers account number and “Mr. Stine” terminated the call.”

Barnett said he called the telephone number today and it is disconnected.
