AMBER TOWNSHIP — Are you looking for a unique experience in your own town? I think Amber Elk Ranch should be on the top of the list as one of the best tourist attractions in Mason County, and west Michigan. This gem, located on 120 acres at 2688 W. Conrad Road between Ludington and Scottville, features an agri-tourism experience for all ages.

amber_elk_ranch_006I went out on a sunny and warm mid-July morning. Owner Bob Northrup and tour guide Gary Andersen took me for a ride out to photograph the bulls where we talked about the history of the ranch. Bob says his fascination with elk goes back to when he was a kid. Moving out West wasn’t an option so Bob brought the elk to Michigan about 20 years ago. He says he wanted to share the experience with others and started the Amber Elk Ranch.

Visitors can ride in a covered tractor-pulled wagon and hand feed and pet the elk. The tour guides are very knowledgable about the elk and can pretty much answer any question. On Saturday nights, visitors can come out for elk burgers on the grill.
