Cops & Robbers 5K will support Shop with a Cop program.

badgeLUDINGTON — Runners will have a chance to help local law enforcement catch a “thief” Friday during this week’s Friday Night Live. The Cops & Robbers 5K race will be held to raise money for Shop with a Cop Christmas shopping program. During the race, participants will be chasing down a “suspect”. The runners will only be provided with the race start location. From there, they will have to rely on volunteer “witnesses” who will direct them along the suspect’s path.

Officer Tony Kuster of Ludington Police Department, who heads up the Shop with a Cop program, said he wanted to hold a unique fund raiser for the important program. Shop with a Cop allows children in financial need to buy Christmas presents for family members while shopping with the aid of a local police officer.

“This program is very special to many of us,” Kuster said. “Every child deserves to have a Christmas and to share Christmas with his or her family. The program also gives these kids an opportunity to have a positive experience with law enforcement.”

However, the program is always in need of more funds.

The event coincides with the Blessing of the Badges ceremony held during Friday Night Live. Kuster said those wishing to donate to the program do not have to participate in the race. He will be at FNL with a booth near the emergency vehicle displays. Funds may also be sent to Shop with a Cop, Ludington Police Department, 400 S. Harrison St., Ludington, MI 49431.

Runners may register for Cops & Robbers 5K at www.eventbrite.com for $20 (plus $2.09 site administration fee) or they may register prior to the event.

The race begins at 6:30 p.m. at Ludington Crossfit, at 311 S. Rath Ave. It is being organized by Ludington Fitness Events.
