LOGAN TOWNSHIP — James William Jansen, Sr., 68, of Fountain, died Monday as a result of injuries he sustained following a motorcycle crash Sunday morning near Carr Settlement, according to his son, Jim. James and his wife, Marsha, 63, were traveling south on Masten Road near Hawley Road when their motorcycle collided with a deer. Both were taken by ambulance to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital and then transported by Aeromed helicopter to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. Jim said Marsha has a broken back but is unsure of other injuries.

The crash occurred about 8:30 a.m. Sunday on Masten Road south of Hawley Road. Initially, medical first responders from Carr Fire Department had requested Aeromed to come directly to the scene. However, the air ambulance gave Mason-Oceana 911 an estimated arrival time of 40 minutes. At that point, the fire department requested the helicopter be re-routed to Ludington hospital, typically a 20 minute flight.

Michigan State Police, which is investigating the crash, has not officially released the victims’ names. MSP reported that both occupants were wearing helmets; neither speed nor alcohol were considered factors in the crash, which is still under investigation.

Responding to the scene were Michigan State Police, Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Carr Fire Department, Branch Fire Department and Life EMS.
