LUDINGTON — Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole’s weekend report includes a 15-vehicle crash and an 11-vehicle crash on US-31 at the same time and a 12-vehicle crash on US-10 during the Valentine’s Day Storm Saturday, Feb. 14. No injuries were reported in any of the wrecks.

The near-blizzard conditions became so severe that the Mason County Road Commission pulled their plow trucks, according to a sheriff’s special statement issued at 5:44 p.m. Saturday.

There were up to 12 vehicles in the ditch, with only minor damage, on US-10 near the Mason County Fairgrounds in Pere Marquette Township at 1:45 p.m. Then at 3:10 p.m., two huge crashes on US-31 occurred at the same time — an 11-vehicle crash near the Meisenheimer Road overpass in Summit Township and 15 vehicles in the ditch near the Ludington rest area in Summit Township. There was no reported damage in the 15-car crash.

At 3:15 p.m., a southbound semi-truck on Pere Marquette Hwy. near Conrad Road in PM Township collided head-on with an Oceana Auto tow truck that was pulling an MCSO patrol car out of the ditch. “The patrol car had been responding to numerous traffic crashes on the US-31 Freeway when he ran off the road and became stuck in whiteout conditions,” Cole said. There were no injuries.
