LUDINGTON — A 20-year-old man will spend the next 10.5 to 30 years in prison for sexually violating a 9-year-old boy.

William Joseph Handshoe of Scottville, appeared in 51st Circuit Court this afternoon and was sentenced by Judge Richard Cooper to prison on two counts of criminal sexual conduct.

He was arrested June 6 by the Mason County Sheriff’s Office on four felony counts of criminal sexual conduct, first degree, with a minor under 13-years-old by a perpetrator over 17-years-old.  The incidents occurred over a two year period at a residence in Scottville and also in public locations in Ludington.

Criminal sexual conduct first degree involves penetration. The charge is a life sentence with a mandatory minimum of 25 years in service.

Handshoe accepted a plea agreement on Aug. 12 to drop the first four charges and add two additional charges of CSC first degree with a minor under 13, but taking off the perpetrator over 17-years-old charge. The first charge includes a 10-30 year prison sentence while the second sentence includes a 5 year, 11 month to 15 year sentence (concurrent) along with mandatory lifetime monitoring. He has already served 110 days in jail and will now be sent to prison. Handshoe will also be listed on the sex offender list.

“He states he is very remorseful for what he did,” defense attorney David Glancy said in court. “I do believe this is something he is taking very seriously and I believe the plea agreement is fair and appropriate.”

The two additional charges involved oral sex with the minor victim and occurred at a residence in Scottville and near the Washington Avenue bridge in Ludington.
