One week ’til the fair

PERE MARQUETTE TWP. — The 78th Western Michigan Fair kicks off one week from today at the Mason County Fairgrounds on U.S. 10 just east of Ludington. From today through opening day, Mason County Press will feature a series of stories about this year’s fair. Here is some fee and schedule information about this year’s fair:

– Entrance fee: $2 per person; ages 5 and under are free.

  • Ride wristbands: $20 (or $18 with coupon), Wednesday through Saturday.

Tuesday, Aug. 5: Opening Day, Dollar Day. Fair entrance $1; all rides $1. 

– 3 p.m.: Midway opens

– 5 p.m.: West Shore Bank Family Buck Night: First 500 children through the gate receive $1 bill.

– 7 p.m.: Demo Scramble and Figure 8 Racing; $10 per person; $15 pit passes.

– 10 p.m.: Fireworks to music, grandstand, free admission to fairgoers.

– 11 p.m.: Midway closes.

Wednesday, Aug. 6: Kids’ Day – $15 ride wristbands, expire at 5 p.m. 

– Noon: Midway opens

– Noon to 5 p.m.: Kids’ Day activities, including bike drawing in grandstand at 5 p.m.

– 6 p.m.: Marek’s Music Makers, east end of Community Center.

– 6:45 p.m.: Western Michigan Fair 2014 Homemaker announced, east end of Community Center.

– 7 p.m.: Rodeo

– 11 p.m.: Midway closes

Thursday, Aug. 7: Veterans and Senior Citizens admitted free (shuttle service from parking lot available) 

– Noon to 2 p.m.: Special Kids’ Day (children eligible for this event will be by invitation only and given an ID badge through the West Shore ESD).

– 2 p.m.: Northern Michigan Championship Mule Pull, grandstand, free

– 2 p.m.: Hay bale toss contest, 4-H Beef & Dairy Show Ring

– 3 p.m.: Midway opens

– 5 p.m.: Mason County 4-H Small Animal Council Auction.

– 6 p.m.: Half time tribute to area veterans

– 6:30 p.m.: West Michigan Livestock Council Auction, 4-H show/sale barn

– 7 p.m.: Garden Tractor Pull, grandstand, free

– 11 p.m.: Midway closes.

Friday, Aug. 8: Fantastic Friday

– 3 p.m.: Midway opens

– 5 p.m.: Pedal Pull for Kids, 4-H show/sale barn

– 7 p.m.: Super Cross, $10 per person; $12 pit passes

– 11 p.m.: Midway closes.

Saturday, Aug. 9: Fair Finale

– 8:30 a.m.: Second annual Stampede 5K Fun Run/Walk

– 9 a.m.: Fifth annual Barn Brawl, youth wrestling, 4-H show/sale barn.

– Noon: Midway opens

– 3 p.m.: Chuck Wagon Scramble, main horse area

– 7 p.m.: Big Demolition Derby: $12 admission; $15 pit passes

– 11 p.m.: Midway closes, fair ends.

Grandstand events: 

  • Tuesday, Aug. 5, 7 p.m.: Demo Scramble and Figure 8 Racing; $10 per person. Pit passes, $15.
  • Wednesday, Aug. 6, 7 p.m.: Rodeo; $12 per person.
  • Thursday, Aug. 7, 7 p.m.: Western Michigan Old Engine Club Garden Tractor Pull; free admission.
  • Friday, Aug. 8, 7 p.m.: Motor Cross, 7 p.m. $10 per person; $12 pit passes.
  • Saturday, Aug. 9, 7 p..: Demolition Derby, 7 p.m. $12 per person; $15 pit passes.

Everyday events: 

  • 3 to 9 p.m.: Bentley the Camel

– All day: Goat Mountain, animal barn area.
