Motorcyclist injured after bike strikes deer on 31

FREE SOIL TWP. — A motorcyclist was injured Thursday evening after the bike he was riding struck a deer on U.S. 31 between Townline and Freeman roads. The man, who was from Illinois, was traveling with a group on a circle tour around Lake Michigan, according to a firefighter on the scene. Most of his injuries were to his head; he was not wearing a helmet. The man was transported by ambulance to Spectrum Health Ludington Hospital. He was later transported by Aeromed helicopter to a Spectrum Health hospital in Grand Rapids.

Emergency personnel from Free Soil/Meade Fire Dept., Grant Twp. Fire Dept., Michigan State Police, Mason County Sheriff’s Office and Life EMS ambulance responded.

The deer was found dead a few feet off the highway on the opposite side of the road.
