Scottville may review refuse contract; bag policy begins next week

March 3, 2014

scottville_logoSCOTTVILLE — Scottville City Commission will discuss the city’s refuse contract during its regular meeting tonight. Due to construction at city hall, the commission will meet at the Scottville branch of the Mason County District Library at 5:30 p.m.

The current refuse contract expires on June 30. The city has the option to renew the current contract or to bid it out. The current refuse provider, Area 31 Recycling and Disposal, LLC of Victory Township, has expressed an interest in continuing service and renewing the contract for three years. It is asking for a 5% increase each of the three years.

City Manager Amy Williams reported to the commission, in a pre-meeting memo, that Republic Services of Manistee has also submitted a proposal for a new three year contract. Republic was the city’s refuse provider prior to the most recent contract.

“We need to make a decision on whether or not to bid out the contract, so that I can prepare the needed documents so we will know our numbers for budgeting purposes,” Williams wrote to the commissioners.

This is the last week residents will be able to put refuse out to the curve without using special bags purchased from the city. Beginning March 11, the refuse hauler will only purchase bags marked with the Scottville refuse logo on them. Those bags can be purchased at city hall or the Scottville Wesco.
