Beach advisory issued, thunderstorms later today

Here are the current conditions for the Lake Michigan shoreline and Mason County (including Pentwater) as of 11:20 a.m.

A beach hazard has been issued by the National Weather Service for the shoreline from Whitehall to Manistee, which includes Ludington and Pentwater.

The hazard is in effect through late tonight. The following conditions may occur:

– High wave action and dangerous swimming conditions.

– Strong structural currents

– Rip currents.

– South winds of 15 to 25 knots will cause waves to build to 3 to 5 feet north of Whitehall this afternoon and continue tonight.

Lake Michigan water temperatures:

Ludington Stearns Park: 58 F

Ludington State Park (Big Sable Point): 53 F

Summit Park: 56 F

Pentwater: 56 F

Afternoon air temperatures:

Ludington and Pentwater: Mostly cloudy at 79 degrees F becoming cloudy by 1 p.m. Temperatures decreasing to 75 by mid-afternoon. Scattered thunderstorms expected around 5 p.m. Humidity: 58%; precipitation: 0 changing to 15% then 40% by 5 p.m. Wind: South at 13 mph.

Scottville: Partly cloudy at 85 F changing to cloudy and temperatures decreasing to 77 F by 3 p.m. Scattered thunderstorms by 5 p.m. Humidity: 48%; precipitation: 0 changing to 20% by mid-afternoon then 50% by 5 p.m.; wind: south at 11 mph.
