Beach advisory in effect, thunderstorms later today

Here are the current conditions for the Lake Michigan shoreline and Mason County (including Pentwater) as of 8:30 a.m.

Lake Michigan water temperatures: 

Ludington Stearns Park: 35 F

Ludington State Park (Big Sable Point): 35 F

Summit Park: 35 F

Pentwater: 49 F

Ludington: Cloudy becoming mostly cloudy by 11 a.m. 65 degrees F, rising to 70 by 2 p.m. Current humidity: 87%; precipitation: 5% (increasing as throughout the day to 30%); wind: South by southwest at 16 mph. Isolated thunderstorms beginning around 3 p.m. with temperatures around 73 F.

Scottville: Cloudy becoming mostly sunny by 11 a.m. 68 F increasing to 78 F by 2 p.m. Humidity: 84%; Prec: 5%; wind: SSW at 14 mph. Isolated and scattered thunderstorms by 3 p.m.

Pentwater: Cloudy becoming mostly cloudy by 11 a.m. 65 F, rising to 70 F by 2 p.m. Humidity: 87%; Prec: 5%; Wind: SSW at 16 mph. Isolated and scattered thunderstorms by 3 p.m. with temperatures at 73 F.

A beach hazard is in effect for the entire area from Muskegon to Manistee through this afternoon. High wave action and dangerous swimming conditions expected. Strong structural currents expected along with strong longshore currents. Rip currents also possible. South winds of 15 to 25 mph blowing parallel to the Lake Michigan shoreline will result in strong longshore and structural currents through today. Waves of 3 to 5 feet will subside to 2 to 4 feet.
