Scottville may raise water and sewer rates

April 1, 2013

SCOTTVILLE — The City of Scottville is considering raising water and sewer rates based on rate increases from Ludington. Scottville purchases water and sewer services from Ludington, which increases rates each year based on the rate of inflation.

“We need to consider doing this as well in order to keep up,” City Manager Amy Williams wrote to the city commission in a memo. “The last thing we need is to fall too far behind and then we would have to increase our rates substantially one year in order to make up the short fall.”

Scottville charges $2.60 per 1,000 gallons of water used and $5,67 per 1,000 gallons of sewage. It also charge a $35.86 per month meter charged. The sewer rate is higher to pay off the city’s sewage infrastructure build several years ago.

Williams said she believed the rate of inflation this year is 1.7 percent, meaning water would go up .04 cents per 1,000 gallons and sewer would increase by .10 cents per 1,000 gallons.

The decision is up to the city commission, which is most likely going to approve it when it approves the 2013-2014 later this month.
