Police searching for suspect in situation with kids

October 25, 2012

SCOTTVILLE — Law enforcement continues to investigate a “suspicious situation” that occurred Wednesday afternoon near the Dollar General Store. Two children were approached by a man in a vehicle who asked them if they “wanted a pop,” according to a Mason County Sheriff’s Office report. “When they declined, he drove away,” the report stated.

The two children then went to the Scottville library and called 911. Deputies searched the vicinity of the city, including Riverside Park, and also interviewed the children at the library.

The suspect is described as in his ’50s with white facial hair and was wearing a black or dark colored t-shirt driving an older model white car, possibly a Ford.

Mason County Press first reported this, as it unfolded, on our Facebook and Twitter feeds.

Sheriff’s deputies were called in because Scottville Police Department was between shifts, Scottville Police Chief Mark Barnett said. There is sometimes a few hour period during the day when Scottville doesn’t have coverage of its own police department. Both departments are working cooperatively on the case.

Any one with information is asked to call the Scottville Police Department or Mason County Sheriff’s Office.
