CUSTER — We have learned that Maisie Urban has passed away, only days after her husband of over 60 years, Johnny, died. Johnny used to tell me that he met Maisie when she was roller skating at the Northern Gardens Roller Rink, the predecessor of Johnny’s of Custer. Johnny and his twin brother, Tony, built Northern Gardens in 1948 when they were 18-years-old.
Last year, while receiving a recognition award at Mason County Eastern, Johnny commented that he would frequent the Custer High School basketball games because Maisie was a cheerleader there.
Together, Johnny and Maisie built an entertainment empire known throughout Michigan. I remember Maisie was always in charge of the wait staff in the restaurant. They were a great team.
