Battery D returns from Antietam

September 24, 2012

PERE MARQUETTE TWP. – Members of Battery D, First Michigan Light Artillery recently returned from the re-enactment of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War Battle of Antietam in Sharpsburg, Maryland.

The Sept. 17, 1862 battle was the first major battle of the Civil War fought on Union soil. It was also the bloodiest single-day battle in American history, with about 23,000 casualties on both sides.

The re-enactment group, Battery D, was founded in 1979.

Over the weekend, the group participated in a Civil War muster at Historic White Pine Village. They are shown here firing one of their Parrot rifles.
