MCC students volunteer to restore veterans’ graves.

LUDINGTON — Mason County Central High School teacher Tom Richert is passionate about restoring graves, especially those of veterans. A few years ago, Richert started researching his family history, which brought him to various cemeteries. He began learning how to clean the graves using an environmentally safe product that is used at Arlington National Cemetery. 

Last fall, Richert proposed a service project to some of his high school students, which resulted in the formation of the Grave Restoration Group. On Thursday, May 27, 27 students, ranging from grades 9 through 12, came to Lakeview Cemetery to begin their project. Richert said his goal is to restore graves at other cemeteries around Mason County. The cleaning products and supplies were purchased by American Legion Post #76 in Ludington.
