Douglas Laman
Douglas E. Laman, 68, of Ludington entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2026. Doug was born on July 3, 1958 in Ludington, the oldest child of Clarence “Clancy” and Virginia “Ginny” (Soerheide) Laman. He graduated from Ludington High School with the class of 1976 and married the love of his life, Cathy Coffin on Oct. 28, 1978. They have celebrated 48 wonderful years together.
Doug worked for his family at Laman’s Landing on Hamlin Lake before joining his father at Laman Asphalt. When his dad decided to retire in 1986, Doug, along with his brother Terry, and brother-in-law John Sniegowski, purchased the business and began L&S Enterprises. With his faith as his cornerstone, Doug felt the call to enter the ministry, furthered his education at West Shore Community College, and became the director of Youth for Christ — a position he held into the early 2000s. Then Doug rejoined his partners at L&S Enterprises which they eventually sold to Rieth-Riley Construction. Doug again felt the call to ministry and served at SpringHill Camp in Evart eventually returning to Rieth-Riley until his retirement in 2021. Never one to be idle, Doug supported and volunteered for his son-in-law’s ministries with Unusual Soldiers and New Life Camp. He also enjoyed being the “project manager” for his daughters, helping them in any way he could.
Along with his faith and his family, people were Doug’s passion. He wanted everyone he met to have a relationship with Jesus. He shared his faith with others through his service, his testimony, and his living example of grace.
Doug always wanted to be a living example for his family starting everyday with his saying – “Remember” which they would reply with “Trust the Lord and do what’s right!” He provided life lessons for his children and grandchildren and was known as a finisher – “you’re not finished until the tools are put away.” He unofficially started a group called “Doug’s Doodles” where they would doodle images relating to the messages during church services. Doug would often post those doodles on his Facebook page after worship. He inspired quite a few to this practice and they would have conversations after service about their artwork. Doug also enjoyed the quiet he found in fishing. He found this as another way of connecting and reflecting with his Savior and will be remembered as a true Fisher of Men.
Doug will be greatly missed by his wife Cathy; his daughters Jessica and Caleb Bislow of Rapid City, SD, Terrah and Timothy Woelkers Jr. of Rose City, and Rebekah and Shane McKerchie of Wakarusa, Ind.; his grandchildren Joshua “Trace”, Kaiya, Asher, and Zander “Creed” Bislow, Jeffrey and Gregory Woelkers, Addison, McKenna, and Eleanor McKerchie; his brothers and sisters Christy and John Sniegowski, Roberta and Steve Tepper, Terry and Karol Laman, Jason and Candace Laman, and Joanna and Stevie Jones; his mother-in-law Charlene Coffin; his brothers and sisters-in-law Robert and Kathy Coffin, Ann and Lon Morell, Joseph and Venita Coffin, Merry and Brian Hass, and John and Shelli Coffin; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many great friends.
Doug was welcomed with open arms in heaven by his parents Clancy and Ginny, and his father-in-law Donald Coffin.
A ceremony to celebrate Doug’s life and ministry will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 11 at Cornerstone Baptist Church in Ludington. Friends may meet with his family on Thursday evening from 5 to 7 p.m., and Friday morning from 9:30 to 11 a.m., all at Cornerstone Baptist Church.
