LUDINGTON — Men Who Care of Mason County presented a $3,400 donation to Hope for Neighbors Thursday, Sept. 3, continuing the group’s quarterly effort to support charitable causes.
Delight Lester of Hope for Neighbors accepted the donation. A ceremonial check was presented for $3,350, but a last-minute contribution increased the final amount to $3,400. Fifty-five people contributed to the donation.
Hope for Neighbors is a faith-based volunteer network that assists immigrants who are in the United States illegally and who have been detained at the North Lake Processing Center in Baldwin. The organization provides assistance that includes visitation, transportation, letter writing, commissary support and other services to detainees and, in some cases, people released from the facility.
Lester has been among those helping detainees who are released from the Baldwin facility. Hope for Neighbors volunteers have helped provide transportation, connect detainees with legal assistance and place money in commissary accounts. Lester has also personally transported released detainees, including driving one man more than 900 miles to his home in Kansas.
Hope for Neighbors was selected to receive the Men Who Care contribution during the group’s Aug. 4 quarterly meeting.
Men Who Care of Mason County was organized in early 2025 by Wally Cain of Ludington and was patterned after Women Who Care of Mason County. Members meet quarterly at People’s Church in Ludington. During each meeting, participants nominate charitable organizations, three are randomly selected and members hear brief presentations before voting on the recipient.
Members generally commit $50 each quarter, with donations going directly to the selected organization. Money donated through the group must be used for charitable purposes benefiting Mason County. Men Who Care operates informally without bylaws, elected officers, a bank account, dues or fees.
Since its first contribution in February 2025, Men Who Care has donated $22,100 to seven organizations and programs:
• $3,400 — Hope for Neighbors, Aug. 4, 2026
• $3,150 — Hand 2 Hand, May 5, 2026
• $3,100 — Childhood Cancer Campaign, Feb. 2, 2026
• $3,200 — Friends of Ludington Police Shop with a Cop/Hero program, Nov. 4, 2025
• $3,000 — Hospitality INC, Aug. 5, 2025
• $3,350 — H.E.L.P. Ministries, May 6, 2025
• $2,900 — Lakeshore Children’s Advocacy Center, Feb. 4, 2025
Men Who Care’s upcoming meetings will be held at 5:30 p.m. at People’s Church, 115 W. Loomis St., on Nov. 3, 2026; Feb. 2, 2027; May 4, 2027; and Aug. 3, 2027.
