PERE MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP — Mason County commissioners are expected to take another step toward construction of a new Mason County Road Commission headquarters when the Finance, Personnel and Rules Committee considers a resolution Tuesday, July 28, authorizing the issuance of up to $24.5 million in capital improvement bonds for the project. The committee will meet at 9 a.m. in the Mason County Airport Terminal conference room, 5300 W. US-10.
The proposed resolution would authorize the county to issue Capital Improvement Bonds, Series 2026, to finance a large portion of the cost of constructing a new, approximately 60,000-square-foot road commission facility on road commission-owned property in Custer. Plans call for a new maintenance shop, vehicle and equipment storage, offices, meeting space, furnishings, tools and related site improvements.
According to the resolution, the county previously adopted a resolution of intent on Feb. 10, 2026, to issue the bonds. A required notice of intent was published Feb. 17, and the 45-day referendum period expired April 3 without any petitions being filed to challenge the project. As a result, commissioners are now being asked to authorize the bond issuance.
The total estimated cost of the project is $26.5 million. The proposed bond issue would not exceed $24.5 million, with the remaining cost expected to be covered through investment earnings, any grants received by the road commission and other legally available funds. The resolution states the bonds would be repaid through road commission revenues, grant funds or other legally available funds. County officials state they do not anticipate levying additional taxes to repay the debt.
If approved, the bonds would mature annually from 2027 through 2046 and would carry an interest rate not to exceed 6%. The resolution also notes the bonds will be sold through a competitive bidding process to obtain the lowest true interest cost for the county.
The proposal was introduced to the Finance, Personnel and Rules Committee on July 14 for discussion only. At that meeting, committee members postponed action until the July 28 meeting. Any recommendation approved Tuesday would advance to the full Mason County Board of Commissioners for final consideration.
