A passion for pets and the Ludington community
Owner Hannah Jehl has considered herself an animal lover for as long as she can remember. After relocating from Indiana to Ludington in 2022 to be closer to family, she quickly embraced the community and its dog-friendly atmosphere.
From Buttersville Park beach to Central Bark at Cartier Park, Jehl and her rescued 55-pound pointer mix found plenty of places to enjoy together.
“I was born a Hoosier, but nowhere has ever felt like home the way Michigan does,” Jehl said.
Jehl said she knew she wanted to build a career in pet care after accepting her first dog-sitting job at age 10.
“Ludington just felt like the place where I could make that goal a reality,” she said.
She said the inspiration for Lakeshore Pet Waste Pros came during her first winter in Ludington after witnessing a neighbor struggle to care for her dog.
“I looked out my back window just as my neighbor, Sue, was bumped by her 7-month-old goldendoodle and fell to the ground,” Jehl said. “As a result of the fall, she spent time recovering in the hospital and didn’t have anyone to help care for her dog. I volunteered to watch her dog while she recovered. Later on, Sue became my first client, and the rest is history.”
Building trust through communication and care
While earning a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University, Jehl worked as a groomer in pet boarding facilities and with animal rescues.
“Those experiences taught me how to build a business focused on pet care,” she said. “I have come a long way from my first dog-sitting gig at 10 years old.”
Jehl said successful pet care requires building trust with both pets and their owners.
“In this industry, there are really two clients: the owner and the pet,” she said. “I get it. My dog is an important part of my day-to-day life. I want him to be treated with love, patience and respect, even when I am not around. That is exactly what I promise to our clients.”
The company offers online scheduling, flexible payment options and recurring service plans. For dog walking services, pets are picked up and returned at home, and owners receive text updates and photos during visits. Clients using pet waste removal services receive photos of their cleaned yard and secured gate, along with a time-stamped confirmation that the requested work has been completed.
