AMBER TOWNSHIP — A 75-year-old Fountain woman was seriously injured Monday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of US 10-31 and Stiles Road.
Emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene at 1:44 p.m. The crash involved a westbound semi-truck hauling a trailer on US 10-31 and a southbound Toyota SUV on Stiles Road.
According to Mason County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Adam Clauveau, the cause of the crash remains under investigation due to conflicting accounts from the drivers and witnesses.
The semi-truck was contracted to haul calcium chloride for Martin Marietta in Manistee, Clauveau said. The truck displayed license plates from Mexico, Texas and Maine. The 41-year-old driver possessed multiple driver’s licenses, including licenses from Mexico and Canada, Clauveau said.
Some witnesses told deputies the semi-truck driver failed to stop for the traffic signal. Others reported that the Toyota driver, who was attempting to turn left onto eastbound US 10-31, failed to stop at the light. Investigators plan to review video from the truck’s dashboard camera as part of the investigation, Clauveau said.
The semi-truck driver was not injured.
The Toyota driver was transported to Corewell Health Ludington Hospital and was expected to be transferred to a trauma center in Grand Rapids for additional treatment.
Emergency units responding included Mason County Sheriff’s Office, Scottville Fire Department, Custer Fire Department, and Life EMS.
The crash remains under investigation.
