MASON COUNTY — A large portion of the western portion of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, including, Mason and Oceana counties, is under an extreme heat warning beginning at 2 p.m. Monday, June 29, through 8 p.m. Thursday, July 2, according to the National Weather Service.
Expect “dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 105 expected,” states NWS.
The warning area included portions of central, south central, southwest, and west central Michigan.
“Heat related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events,” states NWS. “Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.”
A beach hazards statement has also been issued by NWS for Mason and Oceana counties.
“High wave action, strong currents, and dangerous swimming conditions expected. Piers may be heavily swamped by waves.”
The hazardous conditions are expected through Tuesday evening, June 30.
“Strong currents can pull swimmers into deeper water, and high waves can sweep people off piers. Remain out of the water to avoid hazardous swimming conditions, and do not venture out on piers.”
