LUDINGTON — The MV Sam Laud arrived off Ludington about 10 p.m. Thursday but remained at anchor offshore overnight because of storm conditions on Lake Michigan.
The 634-foot freighter entered Ludington harbor early Friday morning and unloaded a portion of its cargo of road aggregate at the Rieth-Riley Construction dock on Pere Marquette Lake.
After completing its unloading operations, the vessel departed Ludington shortly before 9 a.m. Friday for Manistee, where it was scheduled to deliver the remainder of its cargo to the Rieth-Riley Construction dock on Manistee Lake.
The Sam Laud’s departure from Ludington temporarily delayed the scheduled sailing of the SS Badger by about 10 minutes Friday morning.
The Sam Laud was built in 1975 by Bay Shipbuilding Co. in Sturgeon Bay, Wis. The vessel is named after a former president and chairman of the board of GATX Corporation. It measures 634 feet in length, with a beam of 125 feet and a depth of 18 feet, and has a gross tonnage of 24,300.
The vessel is owned and operated by Grand River Navigation Co. of Traverse City, a division of Mainstay Maritime of Williamsville, N.Y., formerly Rand Logistics Inc.
