Mason County Road Commission announces $4.4 million in 2026 road projects

May 21, 2026

SCOTTVILLE — The Mason County Road Commission will invest more than $4.4 million in road improvement projects during the 2026 construction season, including major reconstruction work on South Jebavy Drive and West Vandyke Road.

The projects are outlined in the Mason County Road Commission’s 2026 Primary Road Projects brochure, which highlights six major infrastructure efforts planned across the county.

The largest project, estimated at $1.9 million, includes reconstruction of South Jebavy Drive from US-10 south 1,245 feet and widening the roadway from two lanes to three lanes, or 40 feet wide. The project also includes installation of a new 12-foot watermain, storm sewer, concrete curb and gutter, aggregate base, hot mix asphalt paving and restoration. A new connection to Pere Marquette Highway also will be constructed. Work is expected to begin after the Fourth of July holiday and continue through Nov. 13, 2026.

A separate $350,000 bridge rehabilitation project on Jebavy Drive is scheduled to begin June 1, 2026, with completion expected Aug. 1, 2026. The project includes preventative maintenance intended to extend the life of the bridge and reduce future costs. Planned work includes expansion joint replacement, beam repairs, guardrail repairs and epoxy overlay on the concrete bridge deck.

The road commission also plans to install a new traffic signal at the intersection of Jebavy Drive and Johnson Road in Pere Marquette Township. The $290,000 project is intended to improve traffic flow and safety. Construction is expected to begin after the Fourth of July holiday and conclude Aug. 28, 2026.

Another major project involves improvements to Custer Road north of Free Soil Road. The $1.85 million project includes hot mix asphalt paving, aggregate shoulders, chip and fog seal and roadway work extending about one-half mile north of Free Soil Road. Traffic will remain open during construction with daytime lane reductions. Work is scheduled to begin May 12, 2026, and finish Aug. 29, 2026.

A $1 million Townline Road upgrade project also is planned from Quarterline Road to US-31, covering approximately 2.5 miles. The work includes tree removal, culvert replacements, aggregate base, asphalt paving, gravel shoulders and restoration. The project is being completed in cooperation with the Michigan Department of Transportation and the Mason County Drain Commission. Completion is scheduled for Nov. 13, 2026.

The smallest project included in the brochure is a $60,000 preservation effort on South Lakeshore Drive from Iris Road to the Consumers Power Bridge. The work will involve a chip and fog seal application following more than 900 tons of asphalt paving completed previously. The preservation project is expected to be completed by Aug. 29, 2026.

The projects are part of its ongoing commitment to improving safety, upgrading infrastructure and strengthening communities throughout Mason County.
