MANTON — Mason County Central battled through a talented field Saturday at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 Regional Championship at Manton High School, finishing eighth overall with 40 points and qualifying five athletes for the state finals at Kent City.

The Lady Spartans were led by junior hurdler Maylan Sanders, who continued her standout season with a pair of regional titles and a new school record.

Sanders captured the 100-meter hurdles championship in 15.16 seconds, breaking the previous Mason County Central school record of 15.24 set by Nyah Tyron in 2021. Sanders later completed the hurdle sweep by winning the 300-meter hurdles in a personal-best 46.93.

Faith Hawke also earned a trip to the Division 3 State Finals with a runner-up finish in the discus. Hawke posted a career-best throw of 124 feet, 0 inches to secure her state-qualifying mark.

The Spartans’ 4×400 relay team of Madelyn Sterley, Raelyn Wilson, Nevaeh Battice and Sanders advanced to the state finals with a second-place finish in 4:19.11. Sanders anchored the relay with a sub-minute split of 59.2 seconds to clinch the qualifying position.

Battice added a fifth-place finish in the 800-meter run, posting a personal-best time of 2:29.67 to qualify for the West Michigan All-Star Meet.

“The Regional meet is always the ultimate test, and I’m incredibly proud of how our girls responded,” Mason County Central coach Jacob Boone said. “Taking five athletes to the State Finals is a testament to the hard work this group has put in since March. We are excited to represent Mason County Central at Kent City in two weeks.”

The Division 3 State Finals are scheduled for Saturday, May 30, at Kent City High School.
