HOLLAND — Ludington’s girls varsity tennis team saw its successful season come to an end Thursday at the Division 3 regional hosted by Holland Christian.
Host Holland Christian claimed the regional championship by winning all eight flights, while Coopersville and Fruitport tied for second place. Ludington finished third overall.
The Orioles’ top finish came at No. 3 doubles, where Amaya Sytek and Maggie Tang advanced to the finals before finishing as regional runners-up.
Ludington coach Rob Killips said the Orioles narrowly missed their goal of qualifying for the state finals.
“We missed out on our goal of qualifying for the state tournament by a few points,” Killips said. “We did have some very close matches with champion Holland Christian at several flights.”
Killips pointed to a pair of competitive doubles matches as highlights of the tournament.
“Our No. 2 doubles team of Kennedy Feyers and Lydia Kwietniewski lost a battle with Holland Christian 7-5, 7-5,” he said. “Our No. 4 doubles team of Maddy Erndteman and Chloe Vangills did the same losing 7-5, 6-4. There were definitely some highlights on the day but we came up just short of the end goal.”
Ludington closed the season as co-champions of the West Michigan Conference.
