MONTAGUE — The Ludington varsity softball team earned a pair of mercy-rule victories over Montague on Tuesday, winning 24-1 and 17-5 in a West Michigan Conference Lakes Division doubleheader.

Madison VanSickle pitched all three innings in the opener for the Orioles, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out five.

Ludington’s offense erupted early and often. Madelyn Kenyon went 2-for-2 with two RBI, Kaelyn Cole was 1-for-2 with a double and four RBI, and Annika Heemstra finished 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Eva Flores and Noelle Brooks each went 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Charlie Morse added an RBI.

The Orioles continued their offensive momentum in game two behind a strong performance from Heemstra in the circle. She pitched all five innings, allowing four hits and five walks while striking out eight. She also hit two batters.

Flores led the Ludington offense by going 3-for-3 with two doubles and five RBI. Cole finished 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI, while Morse added a double. Brooks and Taylor King each contributed a hit and an RBI.

Ludington coach Sierra Holmes said the Orioles were sharp offensively and stayed composed defensively.

“We hit the ball well tonight,” Holmes said. “There were a few times when Montague got a hard hit and had some runners on base, but the girls stayed focused and got the outs. We did make a few mistakes here and there, but our thought process was good. It’s always good to get two wins.”

The Orioles improved to 11-15 overall and 4-4 in the WMC Lakes Division.
