LUDINGTON — The Ludington varsity softball team dropped a doubleheader to Holton on Wednesday night, falling 2-0 in the opener and 12-2 in the nightcap.

Madison VanSickle pitched a complete game for the Orioles in the first contest, allowing six hits and four walks while striking out four over seven innings. Offensively, Jacee Cole went 2-for-3 with a double, while Annika Heemstra added a hit.

In the second game, Heemstra threw all six innings for Ludington. She surrendered nine hits, issued 11 walks, hit seven batters and struck out one.

Charlie Morse led the Orioles offensively in game two, finishing 2-for-3. Cole went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Heemstra tripled and crossed the plate.

Ludington fell to 7-15 overall with the losses.

“We are doing a lot of good things defensively right now,” Ludington coach Sierra Holmes said. “Our outfield has really come together, and our infield is making smart plays. Offensively, we’ve been in a bit of a slump for the last few doubleheaders, and that has prevented us from being able to win some very competitive games.

“We definitely took better cuts as the games went along tonight, and we did hit some balls hard that were caught, particularly in the second game. The bottom line tonight was that Holton got more runners on base and got the hits when they needed them. Our girls played hard, though, and continued to battle all the way through the second game.”
