SCOTTVILLE — Mason County Central’s softball team took both games of a home doubleheader against Hesperia on Tuesday at Spartan Community Field, winning 12-2 in the opener and 7-4 in the nightcap.
In Game 1, MCC built an early lead and controlled the game behind the pitching of Payton Cory, who worked six innings, allowing four hits while striking out two, walking two and hitting one batter.
The Spartans’ offense was consistent throughout the lineup. Mackenzie Carney went 4 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Aubrey Chye finished 2 for 4 with an inside-the-park home run, driving in three runs and scoring twice. Ellen Norman added two hits and scored two runs, while Lacie Salanser reached base three times with a hit and two walks and scored once.
Jordyn Melvin, Cory and Andrea Lopez each contributed a hit. Cory helped her own cause with two RBIs, and Melvin added one.
MCC completed the sweep with a 7-4 win in Game 2. Cory again went the distance in the circle, pitching seven innings with seven strikeouts, one walk and six hits allowed.
Melvin led the offense, going 3 for 4 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored. Chye continued her strong day at the plate, going 2 for 4 with a solo home run and a double while scoring twice. Graycee Kalush added two hits, an RBI and a run scored.
Norman reached base three times with a hit, a walk and a hit by pitch and scored once. Cory collected two hits, drove in two runs and scored once. Salander and Carney each added a hit.
Interim coach Denise Cory said the team showed strong play in the opener despite a few defensive miscues.
“The girls played Game 1 well tonight with a few fielding errors but overall very happy with how they played Game 1,” Cory said. “Game 2 was a little sloppy but they pulled off a win. We have a few more things to work on moving forward.”
