LUDINGTON — The Ludington varsity softball team dropped a nonconference doubleheader to Whitehall on Wednesday, falling 5-2 in the opener and 10-9 in eight innings in the nightcap.
Madison VanSickle pitched a complete game in the first contest, working six innings while allowing nine hits and four walks with three strikeouts. Offensively, Annika Heemstra led Ludington, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Eva Flores and Kaelyn Cole each added a hit, and Taylor King drove in the other run.
In game two, Heemstra started in the circle, pitching 2 2/3 innings. She allowed four hits, walked seven, hit two batters and struck out one. VanSickle threw the final 5 1/3 innings, giving up five hits and one walk while striking out two.
Madelyn Kenyon and Braylynn Lange each recorded a hit for Ludington in the second game.
The Orioles are now 7-9 overall.
“We did a lot of good things tonight,” said Ludington coach [name not provided]. “We made some nice plays, and we had a lot of runners on base. Our biggest struggle was that we did not adjust well to their pitching, and we took too many called strikes. When we had chances to get a big hit and break it open, we left a lot of runners on base. That is something we’re definitely going to work on more in practice. Overall, though, I was very pleased with the girls’ effort. We have been working on competing well for an entire game, and we did that twice tonight.”
