FREMONT — Mason County Central’s boys and girls track and field teams turned in strong performances Friday at the Fremont Packer Relays.
The Spartans boys team finished runner-up with 135 points, just behind Fremont’s 140. Sparta placed third with 110, followed by Shelby with 59.
Mason County Central coach Patrick Nelson said the meet demanded versatility, with athletes competing in multiple events.
“I was really proud of how the guys ran today,” Nelson said. “Everyone basically had to be in four events and they all ran hard. I as a coach could have put us in some better positions and possibly had a chance to win the meet, so that falls on me.”
Jackson Poll led MCC with victories in the 100-meter hurdles (16.27), 100-meter dash (11.65) and 300-meter hurdles (43.73).
Other notable performances included Desmond Thomas in the discus (127 feet, 6 inches), Kolby Kessel in the pole vault (12-0), and Eli Smith in the long jump (20-0¾).

In the girls meet, MCC placed third in the Rich Tompkins Packer Relays.
Coach Jacob Boone said the relay-format meet presents unique challenges, combining multiple athletes’ performances in field events and emphasizing relay races on the track.
Several Spartans secured first-place finishes. Lexie Sanford and Bailey Bullard won the team pole vault, while Maylan Sanders swept the hurdles, taking first in both the 100 and 300 hurdles.
The shot put team of Faith Hawke, Sophia Quick, Grace Wright and Luella Purple also claimed first place.
MCC’s 4×200 relay team of Madelyn Sterley, Nevaeh Battice, Reegan Healy and Sanders finished first with a season-best time. The 4×400 relay team of Sterley, Raelyn Wilson, Quick and Battice closed the meet with a win in 4:35.98, the program’s fastest time in five years.
Battice also placed third in the 1,600 meters with a 15-second personal record. Wright recorded personal bests in both the shot put and discus, and the distance medley relay team of Wilson, Lola Designe, Jovi Campbell-Pickard and Adison Thorne placed fourth.
“The Lady Spartans fought hard the whole meet and had many impressive performances but fell behind in the end partially due to injury,” Boone said.

MCC returns to action Tuesday at Hart in a meet with Holton and Hesperia.
