LUDINGTON — Ludington eye surgeon, Dr. Andrew Riemer, has performed what is believed to be the first cataract surgery in Michigan using a newly released intraocular lens designed to improve vision at multiple distances.
Dr. Riemer of Riemer Eye Center completed the procedure last week using the Tecnis PureSee lens, a next-generation implant intended to provide clearer vision with improved quality, according to a news release.
The PureSee lens, recently approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, is an extended depth-of-focus intraocular lens developed by Johnson & Johnson. It is designed to deliver strong distance and intermediate vision with some near vision, without the contrast sensitivity loss sometimes associated with earlier technologies.
Clinical trial data cited in the release indicates 97% of patients reported no significant visual disturbances following surgery. The lens is also intended to help address presbyopia and reduce patients’ dependence on glasses after surgery.
“Each patient has individual visual needs and it is important to have all options available to our patients,” Riemer said. “With multi-focal lens options, most people can be independent of glasses.”
Riemer Eye Center officials said the practice is working to expand access to advanced vision care in northern Michigan by offering a range of lens options at competitive prices.
“Our doctors want each patient to have the best vision available,” said Sue DeMott, practice administrator. “Whether it is glasses, cataract lens options or contacts, it is important to each doctor and staff that we give the best options for the clearest vision possible.”
Riemer Eye Center, founded in 1994, provides ophthalmology and optometry services with offices in Ludington, Cadillac, Manistee and Reed City.
