FREE SOIL TOWNSHIP — A Mason County sheriff’s deputy tackled a fleeing suspect to the ground after the suspect led police on a vehicle chase that began in Mason County and ended in Lake County Wednesday, March 25, shortly before 1 a.m., according to Mason County Sheriff Kim Cole.
A deputy attempted a traffic stop on US 31 at Koenig Road on a 2006 gold Cadillac DTS for displaying an improper registration plate. The driver failed to stop and fled the scene.
The vehicle fled eastbound on Koenig to Custer Road.; north on Custer Road to Hoague Road; west on Hoague Road to US 31; north on US 31 to LaSalle Road; south on LaSalle Road to Hoague Road; back across US 31 to Custer Road; north on Custer Road to Countyline Road; eastbound on Countyline Road; and then crashed into a ditch on Riverside Drive and 10 ½ mile in Lake County, said Sheriff Cole.
The driver then fled on foot into the woods, and the deputy chased him, eventually tackling him and arresting him.
The suspect, who is a 31-year-old Wellston man, was arrested on charges of fleeing and eluding police, cocaine possession and second-offense driving while license suspended.
Lake County Sheriff’s Office and the Michigan State Police, Hart post, assisted deputies at the scene. The suspect remains lodged in the Mason County Jail.
