WSCC News is a presentation of West Shore Community College in partnership with Mason County Press
BIG RAPIDS — West Shore Community College Jazz Band I participated in a collaborative concert with the Ferris State University Jazz Band on Thursday, Feb. 26.
Ferris State’s jazz director, Professor Micah Laird, now in his first year, is building momentum within the university’s jazz program. After connecting with WSCC late last year, Laird was immediately receptive to the idea of hosting a joint concert. With renewed energy and vision for jazz at Ferris, the timing created an ideal opportunity for students from both campuses to perform together and learn from one another.
In addition to the jazz program’s growth, the university recently launched a new marching band initiative under the direction of Dr. Dan Attwood. Beginning with 75 participants this past fall, the program is already laying a foundation for expansion. During the visit, WSCC Professor of Music Ted Malt met with Attwood to discuss future collaborations, further strengthening ties between the institutions.
The WSCC Music Department maintains an articulation agreement with the Ferris State University College of Business through its Music Entertainment and Business program, making the partnership especially meaningful. Events like this not only showcase student talent but also reinforce educational pathways for those considering continuing their studies at Ferris.
“Thursday evening reflected what collegiate music-making should be about: collaboration, connection and shared artistic energy,” Malt said. “Our jazz members not only performed at a very high level, but they also had the opportunity to engage with the Ferris musicians in a meaningful way. Under Micah Laird’s leadership, there is tremendous momentum building in the jazz program at Ferris, and it was exciting to witness that firsthand. Partnerships like this create pathways for our students and strengthen the musical community across the region. I couldn’t be more proud of how our ensemble represented West Shore Community College.”
