Obituary: Edward Alan VandenBerg, 90, of Ludington

Edward Alan VandenBerg, 90, of Ludington, formerly Kalamazoo, passed away on Monday, February 23, 2026.

Ed was born on July 29, 1935, the son of the late Leonard and Margaret VandenBerg, in Kalamazoo. He was a 1953 graduate of Kalamazoo Central. After high school he enlisted in the United States Navy on June 15, 1953. He was stationed on the USS Orion, in Norfolk, Va. On July 27, 1956, he was honorably discharged.

On August 23, 1958, he married Carol Howe. In 1972, Ed and Carol moved their family to Ludington, where they continued making fond memories until her passing in 2001. For 40 years, he was employed by the Ludington Pumped Storage Plant.

He was a life member of the American Legion Post 76, a member of the Eagles, AMVET’s Post 1988 in Baldwin, and The Ludington Boat Club.

Known for his fun and giving nature, Ed deeply enjoyed fishing for salmon on Lake Michigan, golfing, and traveling. He cherished the moments spent with his significant other, Sherry Nielsen, especially their winter getaways to Florida, creating memories that highlighted his love for adventure and companionship.

Edward is survived by his significant other, Sherry Nielsen; daughter, Jan (Beth Bromley) Dykstra, and her daughter, Kendra (Daniel) Spiers and their children, Stephen, Josuha, and Abigail; daughter, Linda VandenBerg, and her daughter Jessica (Ben) Aranda and their children, Danika and Cheyanne; granddaughter, Alexandra (Moe) Williams, and their children, Khalid, Khatessa, Khalette, Vanessa and Vivian; and many nieces and nephews.

Edward was preceded in death by his wife, Carol VandenBerg; son, Keith VandenBerg; parents, Leonard and Margaret VandenBerg; and brothers, Leonard and Tom VandenBerg.
