VICTORY TOWNSHIP — The Lakeshore Badgers hosted the West Ottawa Panthers on Wednesday night at the West Shore Community Ice Arena. The game was close and tight checking, with the teams trading some chances early. The Panthers carried play through much of the first period with the Badgers standing tall, matching their effort with solid defensive hockey. The Panthers scored on a well placed shot with 3 minutes remaining in the period, taking the teams to the intermission with the Panthers leading 1-0.
The Badgers came out strong in the second period and continued to make the Panthers work for every opportunity. The Badgers evened the score about a minute and a half into period, on a nice goal off the rush by Ludington High School senior Jayden Mirretti. The game remained tied until the four minute mark when the Panthers scored the eventual game winning goal on the power play.
In the third period, the Panthers added three more goals to their total while the Badgers were unable to find the back of the net again. The final score was 5-1 in favor of the West Ottawa Panthers. Mason County Central sophomore Brockton Jabrocki took the loss in goal, stopping 17 of the 22 shots he faced.
Mirretti was named player of the game by his teammates. The loss brings the Badgers to 13-13.
The Badgers will close out their regular season with a game at home on Saturday, Feb. 14. Game time is 4 p.m. at the West Shore Community Ice Area.
