MONTAGUE — Mason County Central wrestlers had some big wins Friday during the West Michigan Conference tournament hosted by Montague High School.
Sophomore Wyatt Herwig defeated Whitehall’s Isaac O’Boyle 4-2 to win the tourney in the 126 pound weight class. Herwig (23-12) defeated Hart’s Aiden Schaner 10-9 in the Rivers Division championship finals qualifying him for the crossover match against the Lakes Division’s O’Boyle.
“Wyatt had a really good day.,” said MCC Coach Kendel Trim. “He had to beat two kids that he had lost to before. He wrestled very composed and stayed on his offense and it paid off.”
Seniors Landon Angst, 215 (29-9) and Parker Overmyer, 165 (24-8) both also made the Rivers finals as well. Angst also won his crossover match against Whitehall junior Billy Darke 7-4.
“Both seniors wrestled well today and continue getting better through the end of the season,” Trim said.
Juniors Dameon Gaitan, 120 (27-10) and William Wright, 157 (15-19) both took third in the Rivers bracket.
“Dameon was able to win his crossover match as well against the Lakes conference against Christian Tyndall of Fremont,” Trim said.
In the girls’ bracket the Spartans had all three wrestlers take third place.
Junior Raelyn Wilson, 130 and freshmen Abbey Willoughby, 155, and Alexis Lathrop 125 all had to beat wrestlers they previously lost to to finish in third place.
“The girls have really improved a lot throughout the year,” Trim said. “I am very happy with their performance at the conference tournament. “
The Spartans scored eighth overall.
MCC’s next match will be at Michigan High School Athletic Association Team District 169 at Reed City High School on Wednesday.
