CUSTER — Mason County Eastern fell to West Michigan Lutheran of Wyoming Friday 73-65. The Cardinals came out strong in the first quarter for their final home game of the season. Going into the second quarter, Eastern led 19-6. They continued their lead at the end of the first half, 37-28. However, the Mustangs outscored the Cardinals 22-18.
Lutheran took the lead in the third quarter by scoring 28 points versus MCE’s 12, ending the quarter 56-49. While they came close a couple times, the Cardinals were never able to pass their opponents.
“There were a lot of technical errors,” MCE Coach Austin Boundy said. “Just too many turnovers and bad shots. We came in early with a lead and got complacent. The boys thought it was going to be an easy win. Then, Lutheran went on a run and we panicked.
“We played hard, though. I want to give a shout out to our two seniors, Danny Bothwell and Aaron Drake. They both played hard, tough defense.”
