SHELBY — Mason County Central had two victories and three losses during the Shelby Super Duals Saturday hosted by Shelby High School. The Spartans defeated Fremont, 50-33 and Grant, 48-15 but lost to Reeths-Puffer, 75-10; Decatur, 65-27; and Sparta, 47-30.
MCC Coach Kendel Trim said the meet was a tough one.
Spartan senior Landon Angst (26-8) finished 4-1 on the day.
“Landon wrestled really well today,” Trim said. “He is starting to open up his offense more here at the end of the season and it is paying off.”
Senior Parker Overmyer (22-6) finished 3-1 on the day. Junior Dameon Gaitan (23-9), sophomore Wyatt Herwig (20-11), sophomore Desmond Thomas (13-10) all went 3-2.
“The tournament is traditionally strong but was stronger team-wise than it has been in the past and it is usually really strong. We really looked better today.
“Our hustle and conditioning was the best it has been all year. We were setting the pace in many of our matches. Dameon had a good win over Reeths Puffer and it came down to his pace. Wyatt won a big match today also against a ranked opponent, Cameron Espinoza (No. 9) 13-10.
“Parker’s best match was against Blake Brackett of Sparta. That kid was big and throwing lots of nasty stuff. Parker stayed in good position, fought off his throws and was able to pick up a fall at 2:49. They all really wrestled well.”
In the girls’ bracket Spartan junior Raelyn Wilson (11-9) went 2 – 1.
MCC dual meet record is 14-10. The Spartans’ next match is Wednesday for a regular season dual meet at North Muskegon High School.
