SCOTTVILLE — Mason County Central defeated the Shelby Tigers 64-41 in West Michigan Conference Lakes Division play Tuesday.

“It came down to free throws and rebounds,” said MCC Coach Chris VanderHaag. “I told the guys before the game, if we win those two battles, we win this game — otherwise it’s sprints tomorrow!”

The Spartans kept the lead every quarter, ending the first quarter 19-13 then outscoring the Tigers 13-3 in the second quarter, ending the half with a score of 32-16.

I really liked the way our guys turned up the defensive intensity,” VanderHaag said. “We were able to give Shelby some problems on that end tonight.Overall, it was a great team effort on both ends of the floor. Our steals were up, turnovers were down, and that made a big difference.”

VanderHaag said senior Grayden Etchison had a tremendous game on both ends.

“He was the head of the snake for our defense,” VanderHaag said. “Trent Hawke came out of his shell and finished with 16 points.”

Cole VanderHaag finished with 16 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. “Cole got the team going tonight,” Coach VanderHaag said.

“Tyler Norton and Brandon Peters were the horses tonight.   Both finished with 7 boards a piece “
