WSCC asking students, staff to re-register CodeRED for emergency alerts

January 23, 2026

WSCC News is a presentation of West Shore Community College in partnership with Mason County Press.

VICTORY TOWNSHIP — West Shore Community College uses CodeRED, an emergency notification system that has recently been updated and rebranded. As a result of this update, all faculty, staff, students and community members must re-enroll to continue receiving emergency alerts from the college.

CodeRED allows WSCC to send timely text message notifications during incidents such as severe weather, fires, campus closures, or other urgent situations. Re-enrollment ensures members of the college community continue to receive critical safety information without interruption.

WSCC utilizes CodeRED because Mason, Manistee, and Oceana counties also use the system, creating consistency with regional public safety communications. CodeRED is widely used by local governments and emergency management agencies to quickly record, send, and track alerts.

“Because CodeRED is already used throughout our region, it provides a reliable and familiar way to share emergency information,” said Craig Peterson, media services and learning technical coordinator. “The recent update requires everyone to re-subscribe, but it remains easy to opt in or out at any time.”

To re-enroll in WSCC CodeRED alerts, text 24639 and type “WSCCAlert” in the message. You will receive a confirmation text and begin receiving emergency notifications from WSCC. Instructions to opt out are included in every message.

Residents may also subscribe to county alerts:
